Inauguration of Brunei Darussalam International Islamic Calligraphy Festival 2024
The Brunei Darussalam International Islamic Calligraphy Festival 2024 (BDIICF 2024) was launched on Wednesday, 12th Rabiulakhir 1446H (16th October 2024), at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas. His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, Chairman of the Committee of Governors of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, graced the event and delivered a Sabda.
In his Sabda, His Royal Highness highlighted the profound cultural and historical importance of Islamic calligraphy and the need to preserve the Jawi script, especially among youth.
The inaugural festival, the first of its kind in Brunei, is a collaborative effort between Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), and the Islamic Research Centre for Islamic History, Art, and Culture (IRCICA) based in Türkiye. Themed “Empowerment of Islamic Arts Calligraphy,” the event aims to promote awareness and appreciation of Islamic calligraphy.
In another speech, Professor Mahmud Erol Kılıç, Director General of IRCICA, highlighted the strong cultural partnership between Brunei and IRCICA in supporting Islamic calligraphy.
IRCICA Award Ceremony in Brunei Darussalam
IRCICA Award Ceremony was one of the major highlights of Brunei Darussalam International Islamic Calligraphy Festival 2024 (BDIICF 2024) that was held at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas, in the morning of 16th October 2024, Wednesday. There were 114 submissions from 12 Asian countries, including Japan, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik presented awards to the top participants in four categories: Tsuluts, Nasakh, Diwani, and Diwani Jaly.
In the Khat Tsuluts category, the winners were:
- First Place: Hafize Sunduvag Namazireihanloo (Türkiye), receiving USD1,500, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Second Place: Rivi Pratama Putra (Indonesia), awarded USD1,000, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Third Place: Huda Purnawadi (Indonesia), receiving USD750, a certificate, and a plaque.
For the Khat Nasakh category:
- First Place: Mohammad Mustofa (Indonesia), awarded USD1,500, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Second Place: Nafang Permadi Mulyani Utama (Indonesia), receiving USD1,000, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Third Place: Achmad Jalaludin (Indonesia), awarded USD750, a certificate, and a plaque.
In the Khat Diwani category:
- First Place: Mohammad Abdul Ghoffar (Indonesia), receiving USD1,500, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Second Place: Hayatee Wado (Thailand), receiving USD1,000, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Third Place: Nailul Muna (Indonesia), awarded USD750, a certificate, and a plaque.
In the Khat Diwani Jaly category:
- First Place: Nafang Permadi Mulyani Utama (Indonesia), awarded USD1,500, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Second Place: Mohammad Abdul Ghoffar (Indonesia), receiving USD1,000, a certificate, and a plaque.
- Third Place: Ikhsanudin (Indonesia), awarded USD750, a certificate, and a plaque.

Expert Presentations and Workshops
Over the duration of the Brunei Darussalam International Islamic Calligraphy Festival 2024 (BDIICF 2024). 16th October 2024 to 18th October 2024, experts in the arts of calligraphy have given presentation in allotted day and time of their respective expertise; Khat and Illumination.
Among the experts were Mr Efdaluddin Kilic, Mr Seyyit Ahmed Deppeler and Mr Necati Sancaktutan from the Republic of Türkiye, Mr Belaid Hamidi from Morocco, Mr Didin Sirojudin AR from Republic of Indonesia, as well as Dr Abdul Rahman bin Hamzah from Malaysia who delivered a keynote speech to participants. Representatives from Brunei Darussalam are Dr Haji Shahrol Azmi bin Haji Mulok, Mr Adi Yusnira bin Haji Johari and Mr Bolhanuddin Haji Abdul Wahab.
Over 100 participants attended the presentations and workshops delivered in each of the allocated day and time.
